A Guide to Composite and UPVC Doors

Composite vs. UPVC Doors.

There are two main types of doors that we recommend to our customers. Composite doors, and UVPC doors. They both vary in price, strength, and energy efficiency. However, all doors that we stock are the best available on the market for that type of door. All our doors exceed the current Building Regulations for energy efficiency. If we wouldn’t have them in our home, we don’t expect you to have them in yours.

To try and make your decision on doors a little easier, here is WDC’s guide to both composite and UPVC doors. Read on to find the difference between them. By the end of this, you should feel more informed on your decision, and know which one you want to buy for your home! Once decided, have a go at designing your own doors to your exact measurements…

UPVC Doors – If you’re looking for a quality door at a low price, then UPVC doors are probably what you’re looking for. They are low maintenance, resistant to weathering, and well insulated. This makes them perfect for the home. Requiring minimal upkeep and no painting or staining, UPVC doors are the lowest maintenance option compared to composite doors.

UPVC doors also do a good job in thermal efficiency, which is vital to keep bills low! All the doors in our range of UPVC doors here at WDC comprise of two PVCu skins. The two skins are then pressure bonded to a core material of extra high-density fire retardant additive using a special adhesive that is both heat and moisture resistant. This means that the heat within your home is kept inside, and the cold kept out, keeping your energy bills and heating bills as low as possible.

The construction industry widely favours UPVC doors as the material is inexpensive. The PVC material used for UPVC doors is also used for windows and conservatories too. This is because of the practicality and low maintenance of the material. Alongside the functionality and practicality of the doors, UPVC doors also come in a variety of options to suit your home. All doors are available in various whites to suit most profiles. They are also available in a number of woodgrain finishes including mahogany, light oak and rosewood.

Composite Doors – These doors are the safer, more secure alternative to UPVC doors. Though slightly more expensive, the peace of mind attached to purchasing a more secure door makes them well worth it. A composite door is almost a combination of a wood and UPVC door. They are made from a mixture of materials, such as glass fibre, which is pressed together and glued under high pressure. These are then clad in an outer skin which can be made to look like wood but is far stronger. Though composite doors often feature a wood-like effect, they will not warp or require repainting.

A compromise between style, price and strength; composite doors are the doors we most often suggest to people searching for a new exterior door. A good quality composite door will be made from the highest quality materials meaning they are strong, durable, secure and weather resistant. Due to the way they are made, composite doors offer a high level of security. They are incredibly difficult to break into due to their super-strong structure. This is owing to the way they are made with layers of different materials.
